Understanding Glazes for the Novice

Take a dive into the fundamentals of glaze chemistry with Ilona Topolcsanyi of Melbourne Clay. This two-day introduction to glaze making workshop is designed for ceramicists who are looking to dip their toes into the colourful and creative world of reading, understanding and mixing your own glazes.

Over two sessions, you’ll cover:

  • The elements that are required to make all ceramic glazes
  • Learn about raw materials and their function within a glaze
  • Explore oxides and their relation to raw materials
  • Learn how to design a glaze, record results and troubleshoot
  • Learn how to mix test glazes
  • Fire and evaluate a range of test tiles

 

Equipment, test tiles and firing of work included. Raw materials supplied by Winks Minerals. Notes and references will be provided for students to take home and continue their glaze development.
