Silversmithing for intermediates: Brooch making

Advance your silversmithing skills with gold and silversmith Amy Lees-Doherty.

In this intermediate-level workshop you’ll develop your silversmithing and stone-setting skills while handcrafting a brooch. You’ll learn how to construct a pedestal-prong setting to securely display a gemstone and fabricate a tension pin finding. By the end of this workshop you’ll:

• have designed and made pedestal-prong stone settings
• have gained experience in measuring, shaping and soldering silver components
• have learnt how to set a stone securely using prongs
• know how to fabricate a tension pin finding
• have greater experience in refining, finishing and polishing
• have greater understanding of gemstones, metals, processes and finishes
• leave with learning resources to continue developing you silversmithing skills

All materials and tuition included.

• Participants must wear enclosed shoes, tie hair up and avoid wearing loose-fitting clothing or accessories.

About your Workshop Tutor

Amy is a Melbourne-based gold and silversmith who makes intricate wearable art inspired by mythology and folklore. Her works are held in private collections across Australia, the UK, Europe, and Hong Kong, and she also teaches metalwork and contemporary art techniques. Amy has previously spent time at The Pumphouse through the Artist in Residence program.
