Pottery Wheel Workshop & Surface Decoration with Alinta Maguire for First Nations artists

  • Workshop Dates
    • Session 1: Pottery Wheel Fundamentals | Sunday 15 November 2026 10am – 1pm
    • Session 2: Surface decoration and artist talk with Alinta Maguire | Monday November 16 2026, 5.30pm – 8.30pm

Location: The Pumphouse Makerspace, East Albury

First Nations artists are invited to explore ceramics, learn new techniques and develop ideas for products, artworks or creative projects.

In Session 1, experienced ceramics teacher Pinky Wittingslow will guide participants through the fundamentals of pottery wheel throwing, including centring, forming and shaping clay vessels. Participants will create their own cups, bowls or small forms to be finished in the second workshop.

In Session 2, Gamilaraay artist Alinta Maguire will lead participants through sgraffito, a surface decoration technique that involves carving through a contrasting layer to reveal a design. Participants will decorate the pottery they created in Session 1 while learning about Alinta’s creative practice, processes and approach to working with ceramics.

Together, the workshops provide an opportunity to learn both the making and decoration stages of ceramic practice, from forming a vessel on the wheel through to developing a finished surface design.

These workshops are part of the Elevate Program, funded by Create NSW and led by a First Nations Project Manager. The program focuses on product and business development while creating space to experiment, learn and grow your creative practice.

A culturally respectful approach

The Elevate Program respects Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP), supports artist-led decision making and recognises participants as the owners of their creative work.

This is for First Nations artists at any stage of their creative journey who are interested in exploring new materials, learning practical techniques and developing products, artworks or creative ideas.

How to register

To make sure everyone has plenty of hands-on time and access to the studio facilities, each workshop is limited to six artists.

If we receive more registrations than available places, we’ll look at offering additional workshops. If you miss out this time, we’ll keep you informed about future opportunities.
