Learn to sew your own clothes

This is a four-part workshop series, taking place over the following dates*

  • Saturday 8 August, 10am – 1pm
  • Saturday 15 August, 10am – 1pm
  • Saturday 22 August, 10am – 1pm
  • Saturday 29 August, 10am – 1pm

*you need to be able to attend all sessions (the booking is for all four sessions)

The enrolment fee for this series includes a one-month membership at The Pumphouse valued at $180!  The membership gives you access to The Pumphouse during our supervised hours (30 hours per week), as well as member prices on our workshops.  You can come in and practice your sewing outside the actual workshop times.

Join Tarryn from Hoist Collection as she guides you through the essential techniques of making your own clothes in this four-part workshop. Using a pattern you’ll choose yourself, Tarryn will take you from toile construction and basic alterations, right through to a beautifully finished, press-ready garment.

Designed for beginner to intermediate sewists who know their way around their sewing machines. Over four sessions, you’ll learn

Session one:

  • Pattern familiarisation
  • Intro to toile construction, cutting and marking
  • Basic alterations

 

Session two:

  • Constructing your toile
  • Fitting on the body
  • Transferring corrections
  • Preparing & cutting fashion fabric

 

Session three:

  • Applying interfacing
  • Facings, pockets & zipper insertion
  • Pressing techniques

 

Session four:

  • Continuing construction and finishing
  • Buttonholes and buttons
  • Final fittings
  • Finishing seams and hems

 

You need to bring:

  • Sewing machine you are familiar with, serviced and in good working order with accessories – zipper foot, button hole foot and manual
  • Fabric scissors and paper scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Pins and hand sewing needles
  • Quick unpick
  • Marking tools (chalk, fabric pen or tracing wheel, ruler, tissue paper, French curve if you have one )
  • Fashion fabric (woven) – can be purchased for week two, following discussion in week one workshop
  • Thread to match fashion fabric
  • All haberdashery as per pattern requirements (zipper, buttons, interfacing etc.)

 

 


About the Artist

Tarryn started sewing at age 5, learning from her grandfather, a tailor who introduced her to the beauty of the trade. After completing an Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design and Textiles, she launched a bespoke dressmaking business and is now exploring the world of menswear, drawing inspiration from her family’s tailoring legacy. Tarryn is passionate about making sewing accessible to everyone and loves helping others gain the confidence to create, mend and upcycle their own clothing, ensuring the trade is not lost.
