Kiln Firing at The Pumphouse

The Pumphouse operates two kilns, providing a comprehensive firing service for various types of ceramic work. All kiln firings must be pre-paid at a rate of $10 per kilogram for members and $15 per kilogram for non-members. To book a firing, please fill out the form below and agree to the terms and conditions. You must also mark your work with your name or a unique identifier to make it easier to identify and collect. Please supply a copy of your unique identifier to The Pumphouse staff.

All clay pieces go through a minimum of two firings:

Bisque Firing: This is the first firing for all types of clay. Once your work is completely dry, it is ready for Bisque firing. This process removes any residual moisture and prepares the clay for glazing.
Second (Glaze) Firing: The second firing sets the glazes and hardens the clay to its strongest form. You must specify the type of firing you need to match the clay you used.

If you have not tested your glazes in our kilns before, please supply cookies with your work to prevent damage caused by glaze run during the second firing.

The firing service at The Pumphouse typically takes up to 14 days for each firing to be completed. You will receive an email or message when your work is ready for collection. You can drop your work off at The Pumphouse any time during supervised hours. Supervised hours at The Pumphouse are:

Tuesday: 10am-5pm
Weds/Thurs: 10am-7pm
Fri/Sat: 10am-3pm

*Please note – when entering the total firing weight, please round to the nearest 100g.

To ensure the safety and quality of your work, as well as the protection of our kilns, please read and adhere to the following terms and conditions for kiln firings at The Pumphouse.

THE PUMPHOUSE WILL NOT FIRE:

- Wet Work: All work must be completely dry before it is placed on the firing shelves. Moisture can cause damage to the kiln and may result in damage to your work.

- Work with Foreign Materials: Any work containing materials such as paper, metal, wood, glass etc., will not be fired. These materials can cause kiln damage.

- Glazed Greenware: We do not fire raw clay that has been glazed, as it can pose a risk to both the work and the kiln.

- Greenware to Maturity Temperatures: All work must be bisque fired first for safety reasons.

- Work with Glazed Bases: This can cause the work to stick to the kiln shelf during firing. Glazes must be wiped entirely off the bottom of your piece and the sides wiped to a minimum of 5mm above the base.

- Extremely Thick Pieces: Pieces thicker than 3cm are prone to breaking and will not be fired.

- Hazardous Work: Any work deemed hazardous to the staff or our kilns will not be fired.

- Homemade Clay: Only commercially manufactured clays will be accepted for firing.

GUIDELINES FOR FIRING:

- Ensure you drop off your work to a member of staff, who will direct you where to leave your work for firing.

- Provide manufacture details of the clay prior to firing, ie. The brand and type of clay.

- Hollow or fully enclosed pieces must have a vent hole to prevent explosions.

- Mark your work with your name or a unique identifier to make it easier to identify and collect. Please supply a copy of your unique identifier to The Pumphouse staff.

- Understand your materials and their properties to prevent damage to your work and other people’s work.

- Bring your own boxes and packing materials for collecting your work, as these are not provided.

- Beads and small pieces must be placed on a bead rack or small shelf before placing them on the firing shelves.

DAMAGE POLICY:

- If your work damages a kiln shelf beyond repair, you will be charged the replacement cost of the shelf.

- If your work causes damage to the kiln's interior, a fee will be determined based on the extent of the damage.
